Good Good Father  CCLI Song # 7036612

Verse 1

I’ve heard a thousand stories

Of what they think You’re like

But I’ve heard the tender whisper

Of love in the dead of night

You tell me that You’re pleased

And that I’m never alone

Chorus

You’re a Good Good Father

It’s who You are

It’s who You are

It’s who You are

And I’m loved by You

It’s who I am

It’s who I am

It’s who I am

Verse 2

I’ve seen many searching for answers

Far and wide

But I know we’re all searching for answers

Only You provide

Because You know just what we need

Before we say a word

Bridge

You are perfect in all of Your ways

You are perfect in all of Your ways

You are perfect in all of Your ways to us

Verse 3

Love so undeniable I can hardly speak

Peace so unexplainable I can hardly think

As You call me deeper still

As You call me deeper still

As You call me deeper still

Into love love love

Passage (Slides)  Isaiah  Luke 23:32-43

There were two actual criminals who, along with Jesus, were led away to be put to death on the hill called ‘the skull’. There, Jesus, along with the criminals who were placed on both sides of Jesus were crucified on the cross.

While still alive, Jesus prayed from the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

The soldiers who had hung Jesus on the cross, waiting for him to die, passed the time casting lots to divide Jesus’ clothing among themselves. All the  while the people stood by watching Jesus die.

The political and religious leaders scoffed at Jesus, saying, “He saved others; if he is the Messiah of God, the chosen one, let him save himself!”

The soldiers also mocked Jesus and offered him sour wine while saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” A small sign had been hung over Jesus’ head that read, “This is the King of the Jews.”

One of the criminals hanging on a cross next to Jesus kept taunting him saying,  “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”

The other criminal said to the first, “Even though all three of us have been condemned to die, only you and I deserve this punishment, but he does not, he is innocent and has done nothing wrong.”

Then the second criminal said to Jesus, “Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom.” Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Join me in the prayer of Jesus,

Our Father who art in Heaven hallowed be your name.

Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Forgive us our trespasses, while we forgive those who trespass against us.

And, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.

Amen.

O Come To The Altar  CCLI Song # 7051511

Verse 1

Are you hurting and broken within

Overwhelmed by the weight of your sin

Jesus is calling

Have you come to the end of yourself

Do you thirst for a drink from the well

Jesus is calling

Chorus

O come to the altar

The Father’s arms are open wide

Forgiveness was bought with

The precious blood of Jesus Christ

Verse 2

Leave behind your regrets and mistakes

Come today there’s no reason to wait

Jesus is calling

Bring your sorrows and trade them for joy

From the ashes a new life is born

Jesus is calling

Bridge

Oh what a Savior

Isn’t he wonderful

Sing alleluia Christ is risen

Bow down before him

For he is Lord of all

Sing alleluia Christ is risen

Verse 3

Bear your cross as you wait for the crown

Tell the world of the treasure you’ve found

How He Loves CCLI Song # 5032549

Verse 1

He is jealous for me loves like a hurricane

I am a tree bending beneath

The weight of His wind and mercy

When all of a sudden I am unaware of

These afflictions eclipsed by glory

I realize just how beautiful You are

And how great Your affections are for me

Pre-Chorus

Oh how He loves us so

Oh how He loves us

How He loves us so

(REPEAT)

Chorus

(Yeah) He loves us

Oh how He loves us

Oh how He loves us

Oh how He loves

(REPEAT)

Verse 2

We are His portion and He is our prize

Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes

If grace is an ocean we’re all sinking

So Heaven meets earth

Like a sloppy wet (unforeseen) kiss

And my heart turns violently inside of my chest

I don’t have time to maintain these regrets

When I think about the way that

Old rugged cross (Not BG leader)

[Slide, lyrics for song, is for after introduction of song – show as Rick begins to say lyrics]

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross which was the emblem of suffering and shame. I love that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain. So, I’ll cherish the old rugged cross till my trophies at last I lay down. I will cling to the old rugged cross And exchange it someday for a crown.

George Bennard CCLI Song # 19722

Reveals wrong approach to Jesus’ Message and Earthly/Eternal Purpose

  • Absence of Name of Jesus
  • Absence of Message of Life that Jesus had said was his Goal
  • Presence of Man Made Theology, Eschatology, Death to Heaven
  • Presence of Paul as Filter instead of Jesus Filter (Jesus Death immediately followed by ‘Heaven’, a man made interpretation of Heaven and End Times). Abandoning Jesus’ Life.

The Hill

  • Hill – A specifically chosen hill, chosen for those who would be present, and those who would remain at a distance
  • Cross – Death on Cross was an act of Deterrence, not correction or punishment, but for a brutal death to be seen and experienced. Those condemned were usually guilty of horrendous crimes usually required death on cross.
  • Audience – The makeup of Crowd watching Jesus’ death
  • Jesus – Between Two criminals who deserved cross
  • Spirit – ongoing work in ignored by most except for Penitent Criminal. Who believed and defended Jesus. ‘Save self and us’

[Slide] Engagement While on CrossThen the second criminal said to Jesus, “Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom.” Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

[Slide – Greg Carey Quote] “Maintaining continuity between Jesus’ ministry and his death provides one key marker of healthy theology. Jesus announced the reign of God. His works of compassion restored people to wholeness. Dining with Pharisees and sinners alike, Jesus demonstrated the all-inclusive nature of God’s reign.”

[Slide – Greg Carey Quote] “Jesus parables invited people to imagine a world in which Samaritans demonstrate righteousness, scoundrels model wisdom, and widows win justice. His path led him to Jerusalem, where crowds acclaimed him as king. Jesus approaches his death just as he lived, lovingly, compassionatly and mercifully.”

Greg Carey, Professor of New Testament, Lancaster Theological Seminary, Lancaster, Pa.

[Slide] Radical Forgotten truth of Jesus Purpose – The Cross is about life, not death. The life that Jesus came to give to humans is life and life abundant. Not a Narcissistic life, not a life of  arrogance or entitlement. Not Riches but a life of Fullness and Wholeness.  A life of peace, mercy, compassion, joy, and love. While these are heavenly characteristics they are also traits God calls us to possess and live out here on earth. They are our calling that God speaks to before he ascends to heaven.

[Slide] Jesus’ Life and message was not deleted, erased, or finished at the cross. He must be allowed to live in and through us through our lives.

Holding On To Hope  (Slides) Rick

Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum

“Everybody has it hard, but we can model what it means to find joy even in the midst of hardship. Even in the midst of despair, even in the midst of fear and anxiety. And we can create a different future. Joy is an act of spiritual and political resistance.”

Psalm 130:5-7

I wait for the Lord; my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning. Hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem.

Prayer of Saint Francis Of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope;, Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

in this place

And I know that it’s the

Spirit of the Lord

There are sweet expressions

on each face

And I know they feel

the presence of the Lord

Sweet Holy Spirit

Sweet heavenly Dove

Stay right here with us

Filling us with Your love

And for these blessings

We lift our hearts in praise

Without a doubt we’ll know

That we have been revived

When we shall leave this place

Verse 2

There are blessings

you cannot receive

Till you know Him

in His fullness and believe

You’re the one to profit when you say

I am going to walk

with Jesus all the way

Chorus

Sweet Holy Spirit

Sweet heavenly Dove

Stay right here with us

Filling us with Your love

And for these blessings

We lift our hearts in praise

Without a doubt we’ll know

That we have been revived

When we shall leave this place
