Passage (Slides) Isaiah Jonah 1:1-17
The Lord said to the prophet Jonah, “Go immediately and cry out against the great city Nineveh for their wickedness has come up before me.”
Instead of going to Nineveh, Jonah fled from the presence of the Lord. He boarded a ship going to Tarshish which was 3,000 miles away from Nineveh.
While at sea, God hurled a great wind upon the sea, and a mighty storm developed threatening to break up the ship. The fearful sailors cried to their own gods. All the cargo was thrown into the sea to lighten the load on the ship.
Jonah went down into the now empty hold of the ship and quickly fell into a deep sleep. The captain found and said to him, “What are you doing sound asleep? Get up; call on your god! Perhaps your god will spare us a moment so that we do not perish.”
The sailors cast lots attempting to discover who was to blame for the calamity that was upon them. When the lot fell on Jonah, the sailors asked, “Why is this storm upon us?”
The soldiers interrogated Jonah with questions about his occupation as well as his nationality and people. Jonah replied “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, the creator. I am running away from the presence of my God”
After hearing Jonah’s story, the terrified men yelled, “Do you realize what you have done!?” As the storm increased, Jonah instructed the men, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me.”
The sailors were hesitant to do as Jonah ordered until they realized they could not row to safety. As they threw Jonah into the storming sea they prayed that the God would not consider them guilty of Jonah’s death.” When Jonah was thrown into the waters the sea ceased its raging. The sailors fearfully gave a sacrifice and made vows to God.
But the Lord did not permit Jonah to die, instead, God provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah, where Jonah was for three days and three nights.
Join me in the prayer of Jesus,
‘Our Father who art in Heaven hallowed be your name./ Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven./ Give us this day our daily bread./ Forgive us our trespasses, while we forgive those who trespass against us./ And, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil./ For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Battle Belongs CCLI Song # 7148126
Verse 1
When all I see is the battle
You see my victory
When all I see is a mountain
You see a mountain moved
And as I walk through the shadow
Your love surrounds me
There’s nothing to fear now
For I am safe with You
Chorus
So when I fight I’ll fight on my knees
With my hands lifted high
O God the battle belongs to You
And every fear I lay at Your feet
I’ll sing through the night
O God the battle belongs to You
Verse 2
And if You are for me
Who can be against me
For Jesus there’s nothing
Impossible for You
When all I see are the ashes
You see the beauty
When all I see is a cross
God You see the empty tomb
Chorus
So when I fight I’ll fight on my knees
With my hands lifted high
O God the battle belongs to You
And every fear I lay at Your feet
I’ll sing through the night
O God the battle belongs to You
Bridge
(An) Almighty Fortress You go before us
Nothing can stand against
The power of our God
You shine in the shadows
You win every battle
Nothing can stand against
The power of our God
Chorus
So when I fight I’ll fight on my knees
With my hands lifted high
O God the battle belongs to You
And every fear I lay at Your feet
I’ll sing through the night
O God the battle belongs to You

O God the battle belongs to You
Before The Throne Of God Above
CCLI Song # 2306412
Verse 1
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav’n He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart
Chorus
Hallelujah
My life is found in Jesus Christ
Hallelujah
For I am His and He is mine
Verse 2
When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end to all my sin
Because the sinless Saviour died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me
To look on Him and pardon me
Chorus
Hallelujah
My life is found in Jesus Christ
Hallelujah
For I am His and He is mine

[S] [‘S’ – this is new Slide indicator] Jonah Title Slide [screenshare – prayer]
Intro – ‘Enemies’, Dr. Adkins Whitesides FBC, Winchester, Virginia
[S] Jonah’s conflict with God’s Calling is also Jonah’s conflict with God.
Compare to recent denomination examples of refusing to ‘go’
- [S] Unique Calling, same basic time of Joel, Amos, Hosea, Jonah, Isaiah, Micah calling to the Isrealites of N. Kingdom. Jonah was called to go to the Ninevites, a city in Assyria who would, 25 years later, conquer N. Kingdom and take citizens to exile. Different place and time that Bablylonian exile of Judah.ot a message to the Israelites, a message to the Ninevites.
- [S] Unique Response, Jonah, filled with human justified hatred (Ninevites were known for well documented brutality towards Hebrews) does not go to Nineveh which would be 500 miles ago, he heads for Tarshish which is 1500 miles away in opposite direction, basically as far as he can go.
- [S] Unique Reply, God sent storm and large fish.
- [S] Unique Obedience, resentful/hateful Jonah runs through Nineveh in one day (usually a fast three day walk) un-passionately proclaiming they must repent.
- [S] Unique Ripples, People/King repent, Spirit had moved, Jonah is mad and sulks, 25 years later Israel conquered by Assyria/Nineveh.
- [S] Unique Purpose, an opportunity to be a part of the redemption/saving of N. Kingdom (transformed Nineveh may have led to a transformed Assyria).
[S] Our conflict with God’s Calling is also Our conflict with God.
Call to love God and Others
[S] Jonah fails to understand that his own faith as well as God’s calling cannot be about Self
- [S] Jonah Fails to understand that the true worker in all of God’s calling is the Spirit who had moved long before Jonah’s work. Jonah seeks to stop the work of the Spirit. Does not trust God’s calling
- [S] Jonah Fails to see that he is also unworthy of God’s grace, mercy, steadfast love, & his core character of being slow to anger character hesitate to quickly punish – Jonah cannot stomach God giving the Ninevites the same experience of grace that God gave him. Jonah does not trust God because he knows God. The thing that causes him to follow also repels him from God’s calling
[S] We fail to understand that our own faith, as well as God’s calling, cannot be about us (it cannot be ‘I’m hurt by them, or ‘I’m uncomfortable around them,’ or ‘I don’t understand them).’
[S – scary fish] Closing – Image of Jonah being held captive by a fish, while at the same time refusing to let go of the fish, representing the paralyzing manner Jonah’s hated/resentment kept him from fully trusting the God – Reminiscent of story of Good Samaritan
[S] ‘Following repentance of the Ninevites, Jonah prayed to the Lord and said, ‘O Lord! Is this not what I said while I was still in my own country? That is why I fled to Tarshish at the beginning, for I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from punishment.
[S] O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” And the Lord said, “Is it right for you to be angry?”’ (Jonah 4:2-4)
[S] Back to initial story on the boat – A cry to, and for, believers and their communities of faith (churches)… ‘Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down into the hold of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep.’
[S] Captain said to Jonah, “Why are you sleeping? Get up; call on your god! Perhaps your god will spare us a thought so that we do not perish.”

Closing Responsive Reading Benediction (Slides) Rick
Leader: As we leave this place, we remember the belly of the fish in which Jonah struggled for three days and three nights. Wrestling with those hatreds, fears, and resentments that had swallowed him and held him captive, unable to live the life God desired him to live.
Response: May we be able to live fully as our gracious and merciful God desires us to live. May we be slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
Leader: After three days and three nights of struggling to survive the belly of the fish, Jonah recognized the depths to which his life had sunk. Jonah cried out to God for help.
Response: God heard his cry, may we listen to hear God’s response as we cry out.
Leader: As the fish continued to hold on to Jonah, Jonah struggled to let go of the fish. While his mind recognized his own need for God’s grace, his heart wanted that same grace withheld from the Ninevites.
Response: May we let go of those things that hold us captive, that cause us to not recognize our own undeserving of God’s mercy and compassion.
Leader: Jonah remembered God, the God from which he had run, the God who had called him to a difficult task, the God who would surely show compassion and mercy to the Ninevites.
Response: Jonah, with his mind, began to worship and serve God, his heart was still holding to the fish.
Leader: God remembered the Ninevites, as he remembered Jonah, and, as he remembers us.
Response: God was, and God is, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
(Adapted from Jonah’s prayer in Jonah 2)
Closing Peace (Slides) Rick
“Everybody has it hard, but we can model what it means to find joy even in the midst of hardship. Even in the midst of despair, even in the midst of fear and anxiety. And we can create a different future. Joy is an act of spiritual and political resistance.”
Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum
Leader: May the peace of the Lord go with you.
Response: And also with you.
