Standing on the promises of Christ my King

Through eternal ages let His praises ring

Glory in the highest I will shout and sing

Standing on the promises of God

Standing standing

Standing on the promises of God my Savior

Standing standing

I’m standing on the promises of God

Verse 2

Standing on the promises that cannot fail

When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail

By the living Word of God I shall prevail

Standing on the promises of God

Chorus

Standing standing

Standing on the promises of God my Savior

Standing standing

I’m standing on the promises of God

Verse 3

Standing on the promises I now can see

Perfect present cleansing in the blood for me

Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free

Standing on the promises of God

I’m standing on the promises of God

Passage (Slides) Luke 5:1-11   Cricklins

Once while Jesus was standing beside the Sea of Galilee and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets.

Jesus got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When Jesus had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”

Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.”

When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to burst. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink.

But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’s knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” Simon, and all who were with him, were astounded at the catch of fish.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” When Peter and the others with him had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed Jesus.

Join me in the prayer of Jesus,

Our Father who art in Heaven hallowed be your name./Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven./ Give us this day our daily bread./ Forgive us our trespasses, while we forgive those who trespass against us./And, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil./For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Do It Again   CCLI Song # 7067555

Verse 1

Walking around these walls

I thought by now they’d fall

But you have never failed me yet

Waiting for change to come

Knowing the battle’s won

For you have never failed me yet

Your promise still stands

Great is your faithfulness

Faithfulness

I’m still in your hands

This is my confidence

You’ve never failed me yet

I know the night won’t last

Your word will come to pass

My heart will sing your praise again

Jesus you’re still enough

Keep me within your love

My heart will sing your praise again

Your promise still stands

Great is your faithfulness

Faithfulness

I’m still in your hands

Basics

Live Like Jesus Lived…. In our quest to see, know, and understand, the inner foundation, motivations, intentional steps, and even frustrations of Jesus. We have watched as Jesus, post nativity, has grown into his own skin experiencing all that being human means.

  • [Slide] At the age of 12 we witnessed Jesus take responsibility for his own faith; choosing to learn about God and humans through seeking and searching truth, all the while asking questions.
  • [Slide] At the age of 30, we have seen Jesus, with 18 years of seeking, searching and asking questions under his belt, step into the baptismal waters in order to please God.
  • [Slide] Jesus intentionally faced temptation head on, then he went home where he was rejected by his own people
  • [Title Slide] Today, we find Jesus cornered on the beach.

Passage

  • As Jesus had traveled through the region of Galilee he had gained a following that grew larger each day.
  • Even after his heart breaking experience in Nazareth he still grew in his popularity.
  • Now, he was stuck between the sea and the crowd. Stuck in the sand with no place to go except into the water.
  • Trapped by the crowd, Jesus walked over to the boats of some fishermen and climbed into one the boats asking the owner of the boat, a man named Simon who will later be known as Simon Peter, to row the boat out into the water so he could speak to the entire crowd.
  • Note: earlier, Simon’s mother-in-law had been one of the people Jesus had healed which explains why Simon was willing to follow this and another request from Jesus.

[Slide] When Jesus was finished speaking to the crowd he requested Simon to Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch. Simon respectfully tells Jesus about their fruitless attempts to catch fish the night before.

[Slide] Eventually, Simon said Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.”

Jesus told Simon to try again. Even though they had previously had no success, still, they were to try again.

Simeon and his crew threw the net back into the water and as they lifted the overflowing net immediately having to call for help from the other boats and fishermen.  Simon broke down in his realization of the moment, that this was God and that he, just like the prophet Isaiah before him, recognized his own unholiness.

[Slide] Simon recognized that this was a holy moment.

[Slide] Jesus told Simon to not be afraid, and then told Simon and some of the other fishermen, saying, “From now on you will be a fishers of people.”

Insight – Catching

Last week’s challenge

  • ‘Catch’/’Fishing’
  • Zōgrōn, zogreal
  • Roman understanding – capture, enslave, own
  • Fishermen – catching, vocation, sustenance

“You will be fishing for men’

  • Purpose/personal, Core being
  • Investment, not in supplies and equipment, not a fight or argument, but in personal life investment just like the disciples will be come investors in the lives of others.
  • Catching people with life which is then verified through words. Possibly 2 dimensional word, allowing them to ‘Catch up’
  • It is about life, Jesus will be showing these men his beliefs\faith through his life, 24/7/365. Current day discipleship has become about controlling.
  • Showing people what it is to follow God through his life rather than through verbal persuasion and argument.  They will catch up with Jesus’ understanding of what Jesus understood about God’s love.
  • [Slide] ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe all that I have taught you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Matthew 28)

Jesus was ‘catching’ these men’s hearts and minds in order  to sacrifice his life for them. The life of Jesus they would witness over the days ahead would catch them. Actions verified by words.

Jesus was going to challenge their institutional faith, he was going to push the limits of how they saw their faith in the long run.  Jesus would soon be saying things like.

[Slide] Blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn, blessed are the meek, blessed are those who hunger and thirst blessed are the merciful, blessed are the pure in heart, blessed are the peacemakers, blessed are those who are persecuted, blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you.

[Sermon Title Slide]

What was Jesus teaching? He was not building a church. He was not creating a new religion called Christianity. Jesus was still speaking in the purview of the Jewish religious institution. He was defining, pushing, expanding, perfecting and completing their faith. He was telling a community, and beyond, that God loves them by showing them God’s love, so they could tell all the nations that God is Love, so that we can show all peoples that God loves all people.
